Implanting Confidence With a Smile

Before we discuss how dental implants can restore your beautiful smile and boost your self-confidence, let’s find out what a dental implant is.

Think about one of your own teeth for a moment. Pick a tooth and visualize its root secured in your jawbone. If you were to lose that tooth, you’d lose the root. There’d be an empty place in the bone. What would happen then? Just as “nature abhors a vacuum”, so teeth abhor gaps. They move to fill them and get out of alignment. The bone shrinks to fill the gap left by the missing root, and this changes the shape of your face.

What’s a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root. It is placed in the jawbone, filling the gap left by the missing tooth root. The bone grows in around it closely, holding it as firmly as it once held the natural root. This healing takes several months. Then a porcelain crown is affixed to a tiny abutment or post at the top of the implant and now you have a whole new tooth.

If your overall oral health is good and you have lost a tooth due to disease, injury or some other reason, you may be a good candidate for a dental implant. Missing teeth can be embarrassing and can inhibit your smile and your laughter. But an implant with a pearly porcelain crown will fill the gap.

This means you can carry on daily activities, smiling, laughing, eating, talking, without fearing that anyone will know you’ve had ‘work done’ on your teeth. You can imagine how this might boost your confidence both personally and professionally. With good dental hygiene, implants and their crowns can last a lifetime, so there’s no worry about future dental visits for adjustments or replacements.

What Can Dental Implants Do?

· Replace a tooth or several teeth with no adverse effect on surrounding teeth
· Support a bridge and eliminate the need for partial dentures that may be removable
· Support dentures, for increased security and comfort

What Types of Implants Are Used?

1. Endosteal (in the bone)
· Most common implant
· Screws, cylinders or blades surgically implanted in the jawbone
· Each implant holds one or more artificial teeth
· Endosteal implants are an alternative if you have bridges or removable dentures

2. Subperiosteal (on the bone)
· Placed on top of the jawbone, beneath the gums
· The posts of the metal framework protrude through the gum, effectively holding the crown
· Used if you can’t wear conventional dentures or do not have enough bone to support endosteal implants

In the past, a device called a ‘bridge’ was the best choice if you had missing teeth. But dental implants have changed that and now rank as the number one treatment choice, because they prevent bone loss and gum recession, and are undetectable. The success rate of implants is high, helping people to feel comfortable and confident.

At Dr. Michael Iott’s website you can see good diagrams of how implants are done. The text clearly and briefly explains each procedural step. You can immediately see how one or more implants can support one or more teeth, or dentures. In fact, if you spend a few minutes poking around his site, you’ll see excellent illustrations of how crowns are done, how they can be done in one visit instead of the usual two, and many other modern dental services.
